Design

The design of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 looks very clean, nice, attractive and simple especially when you flip it over to the back. You will quickly admire the glass back and the glossy frame on the edges which does compliment.

There is also another corning gorilla glass 5 in front too. So we have a front and back glass and a gloomy frame in between. With these, we can confidently say that the Redmi Note 8 body is more of glass than anything else.

So you need to exercise some extra care when handling it in Nigeria. Don’t forget to size it in a nice case or use the traditional one that is right inside the box.

At the back, you will find the fingerprint reader and quad camera set up. The volume and power buttons are in her usual spot on the right, there is also a triple card slot on the left.

At the top, there is an infrared remote control and microphone. You will also find the Speaker grill, USB Type-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack and a second microphone at the bottom.

The need for a second microphone was to enable the Redmi Note 8 achieve more clarity when making phone calls in Nigeria. There is even a high volume earpiece to ease things up.

When it comes to sound, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 has a 1217 super liner speaker that is loud and heavy. It has a new feature called Auto Cleaning Speaker that helps to resist dust, water and low-viscosity liquid.

Talking about resistant, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is splash resistant. It can survive light drops of water.

Display

On the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is a 6.3inch FHD+ screen that is clear, bright and sharp. You will be very amazed to see how rich the display looks. Around the display is a tear drop notch at the top and a small chin at the bottom.

The display is far above entry-level. If you have seen the display on a Xiaomi any smartphone in Nigeria before, you will understand what I mean.

Right from the basics, they have always presented a display that is satisfying and the Redmi Note 8 is not different.

Camera

The camera is the number one thing Xiaomi have been using to brag about the Redmi Note 8 in Nigeria this year. Well, am not surprised. Do you know why?

The reason is not far from the truth, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 comes with an exciting camera that did not only check my list but also level up with competition.

Am talking ultra wide-angle which is already becoming a must have camera feature in Nigeria nowadays. I am glad the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 has it all set.

On the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, there are up to 4 solid cameras. A 48MP main, an 8MP ultra wide-angle, a 2MP macro and a 2MP depth with LED flash.

The quad camera set up comes with an incredible 8000 x 6000 ultra-high resolution that can take photos that is almost 19 times the phone screen resolution. It has EIS stabilization and support 4k video recording at 30fps.

The quad camera has 120 degree anti-distortion and an ultra wide-angle camera that takes in scenes 2.2 times larger than normal. You can even set the auto reminders to activate the ultra wide-angle mode automatically.

There is also an AI powered portrait mode that allows you to take beautiful background blur photos with her intelligent scene recognition and even add special effects to make it look even more beautiful.

Macro lens is also available on the camera, it offers a remarkable 2cm – 10cm auto focus which is very much appreciated particularly here in Nigeria where there are only a few smartphones that can maintain that amount of distance in her price.

When it comes to front-facing, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 comes with a 13MP front-facing camera that can take professional portrait selfies with beauty filters and blur adjustment. There is also an AI beautify algorithms to support.

Selfie panorama and palm shutter have also been recently added to the selfie camera of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8. This is a feature many of us in Nigeria will find very interesting.

Battery life

We all know how good the Redmi Note is with battery life. The number 8 is not far from it. Under the hood is a non-removable 4000mAh lithium Ion polymer battery that can last for a good amount of time.

With this, you are guaranteed a minimum of 2 days with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 in Nigeria. It even last longer for light user. You can get up to 23 hours battery life for calls, 15 hours for videos and 7.5 hours for gaming.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 also comes with an 18W fast charge battery tech that can deliver up to 100% beginning from 0% in 2 hours. So two hours gives you 4000mAh to consume in Nigeria which is not bad at all.

Software & Spec

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 comes with Google Android 9.0 Pie based on MI UI 10.4 which looks very clean, simple and easy to navigate without experiencing any serious lag.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 runs on a 2.0GHz high performance octa-core processor, it is Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 AIE which is more efficient in battery life and AI performance.

There is also an Adreno 610 graphics processor inside. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is available in two storage options: 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM and 4GB RAM, 64GB ROM. You can choose your most preferred when buying in Nigeria.

My Thoughts

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is indeed a smartphone that is worth your cash if you are considering making a perfect upgrade in Nigeria. From display to camera, battery, performance among other features. Everything here is perfectly okay for the price.

I am sincerely thankful to Xiaomi for setting out time to add new features to the her Redmi Note 8 especially in the camera department were we saw a new ultra-wide angle lens which is my favorite camera feature here.

For the game lovers looking for a smartphone with extraordinary gaming experience, I suggest you try the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 too but if you want your next smartphone to be fully dedicated for gaming, you can get the “Pro” variant.
