Samsung Galaxy Watches are set to receive an enhanced sleep feature following official approval from the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). This groundbreaking update introduces a first-of-its-kind sleep apnea tracker, a valuable health tool for users. The sleep apnea feature is expected to roll out in the summer, offering users the ability to monitor their sleep and identify potential warning signs of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), even before a formal diagnosis.

To utilize this feature, users will need a compatible phone and a Galaxy watch. The device should be worn for two sleep periods, each lasting more than four hours, within a ten-day period. It’s important to note that this feature is specifically designed for adult users aged 22 and above.

According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), approximately 25 percent of men and 10 percent of women in the U.S. experience OSA. The Samsung Health Monitor app’s new sleep apnea tracking feature aims to empower users to proactively identify moderate or severe forms of OSA. Detecting these issues early on can prompt users to seek medical care, potentially reducing the risk of health-related complications.

Samsung’s achievement in securing FDA approval positions it as the first tech company to obtain such recognition in the U.S. market for a sleep apnea tracking feature. However, it’s anticipated that other companies will follow suit, with rumors circulating that Apple Watches are poised to receive a similar upgrade later this year. Apple is reportedly working on integrating sleep apnea detection alongside proposed tools for monitoring blood pressure and diabetes.

It’s worth noting that some other fitness watches, including Fitbits, already possess the capability to detect and monitor breathing patterns during sleep. This existing functionality can be valuable for individuals seeking a potential sleep apnea diagnosis.

In conclusion, Samsung’s sleep apnea tracker represents a significant advancement in wearable health technology. As more companies explore similar features, the landscape of health monitoring through smartwatches is expected to evolve, providing users with valuable insights into their well-being.
