Huawei P20 Pro – Best Camera Phone Of All Times?

Last Updated on June 16, 2021 by TM

The Huawei P20 Pro is a high-end smartphone with modern tech inside. To be honest, I wasn’t really interested in reviewing this phone in Nigeria until i saw three things which eventually drew my attention.

The first was the unique glass finished color at the back that made it look very attractive, the second was the perfectly placed 4000mAh battery on this sizeable phone with a nice weight to go for and thirdly was the tastefully finished 3 excellent camera shooters (40MP, 20MP and 8MP) at the back, now you are beginning to understand why I asked if the Huawei P20 Pro is the best camera of all times.

I really must commend Huawei for the nice job they did with the design feature and manufacture of this phone, at least they now have a phone that can shamelessly compete with the likes of IPhone X, galaxy S9 and even Google’s pixel 2 in Nigeria.

The Huawei P20 Pro also has other outstanding features, some of which includes; a Kirin 970 chip, an IP64 water resistant and an OLED display. Despite the hype about this phone, it is likely to have one or two flaws.

Keep reading as I nail out every single thing you desire to find out about the Huawei P20 Pro.

Price and availability

The Huawei P20 Pro is expected to cost about 300,000 naira but we are still not sure about when the phone is expected to arrive Nigeria.

Design

The Huawei P20 Pro has a unique design that begins with magical color on a glass back which is sure to catch your attention when you see it in Nigeria.

I use the word “magical” because it’s hard to identify the exact color of this phone. To some it looks a little bit like blue, to others purple, turquoise green etc. depending on where you are viewing from.

The Huawei P20 Pro is unarguably the first Huawei phone to spot a notch at the top, it has a body that is made of glass, a frame that is scratch resistant and is surrounded by an aluminum ray with curved edges.

The Huawei P20 Pro still has her usual fast fingerprint reader which is rightly position just below the display in front. The power and volume buttons are on the same side and are easy to press.

The face unlock is extremely fast too, it helps to capture and unlock your phone using the front camera.

The Huawei P20 Pro has a nice weight that is lighter and 7.5mm thick. The USB-C port and speaker grill are well positioned at the bottom but I didn’t see a headphone jack anywhere around the edges of this phone.

Some Nigerians who are likely to buy this phone in Nigeria may not find this exciting but Huawei provided a USB-C adaptor as an alternative.

What’s on the Display?

The Huawei P20 Pro has a 6.1inch OLED display with a 1080 x 2244 resolution that is perfectly okay but not the best among its competitors in Nigeria.

It is however bright enough to use outside. The display is spread across an 18.7:9 aspect ratio and the pixel density is 408ppi.

The Huawei P20 Pro comes with Huawei latest UI (EMUI 8.1) which tends to have some of Samsung’s feature like multi-tasking, turn on or off screen navigation, multiple power save mode, adjustable screen resolution, smart screenshot and a host of other features to play with.

The new Huawei user interface also let you hide the notch at the top if you feel like going bezeless for a while. You also can change anything you don’t like on the display except for the visual changes like Huawei icons.

The Huawei P20 Pro has a display quality that isn’t really excellent although it display some minimal blue cast when tilted and the standard colors looks a little saturated but there isn’t much to worry about because you can modify the color temperature to suite your choice-display.

Camera

The camera is the biggest strength of this phone in Nigeria. Like earlier said, the Huawei P20 Pro has 3 cameras at the back; a 40MP main sensor with optical image stabilization and an f/1.8 aperture, a secondary 20MP mono chrome sensor with optical image stabilization and an f/1.6 aperture and lastly an 8MP 3x zoom telephoto lens with optical image stabilization and an f/2.4 aperture.

The physical size of the 40MP sensor is large, it is about twice the size of the sensor in a pixel 2, iPhone 10 and even the galaxy S9 sensor.

Now that you’ve heard that this phone has a huge 40MP camera sensor at the back, am very sure you will be wondering if it actually takes 40MP photos.

The Huawei P20 Pro shoot excellent pictures in Nigeria, be it 40MP, 10MP and even lower pixels. Surprisingly, the camera produce better 10MP shots to the point that even when you zoom to as high as 100%, it appears very much sharper than that of the 40MP sensor.

The 40MP sensor also has its plus too, the large sensor baked inside gives you bigger pixel, better performance and low light sensitivity.

One good thing about the Huawei P20 Pro camera is the fact that its superfast, it starts processing your picture the moment you tap the snap button in a blink, it is undeniably one of the fastest around, even you will testify to this when you see the Huawei P20 Pro in Nigeria.

The Huawei P20 Pro also have AI (artificial intelligence) on the camera, the AI can automatically identify what you are taking photo of and select the camera mode that suite it.

Battery Life

Let’s talk about the camera of this phone, the Huawei P20 Pro has a huge 4000mAh battery which is sure to last for a whole day even when you play with it a lot.

The Huawei P20 Pro is surprisingly not thick even when it has a 4000mAh stack inside.

On battery test, the Huawei P20 Pro lost only 9% when it was used to watch a 90 minute video, even when it was used to stream youtube videos, play games and listen to so many audios, the Huawei P20 Pro still had enough battery stock in reserve.

The Huawei P20 Pro also has fast charging feature, it takes 1 hour 24 minutes to full from 0 to 100%. So if you are out there looking for a smartphone with great battery life to buy in Nigeria, I recommend you get this phone.

Performance

The Huawei P20 Pro didn’t perform excellent when compared with other high-end flagship. It uses the same Kirin 970 chipset as the Huawei mate 10 pro of 2017.

The Kirin 970 is backward among other chipset like the snapdragon 845 on the Galaxy S9 even though it has 8 cores.

In geek bench 4, the Huawei P20 Pro scored 6,775 points which is roughly lower than the approximately 9000 points on the Galaxy S9 and 10,000 points on the IPhone X.

The Huawei P20 Pro internal storage is pretty quick but the CPU and GPU are low in many instances as compared to other flagships.

Is this the Best camera phone in Nigeria?

Having gone through my review of this phone, I am sure you would be wondering if the Huawei P20 Pro is the best camera phone in Nigeria. Hmmmm…

I guess you know the answer already, the Huawei P20 Pro no doubt has a wonderful camera to shoot with, the camera produce pretty great photos though but it’s still not close to that on Google’s pixel 2.

My Thoughts

The Huawei P20 Pro is a nice phone with so many features stock inside. Personally for me, the Huawei P20 Pro is currently my best Huawei phone in Nigeria. Even though the Huawei P20 Pro has a lot of plus, it still has a few minus.

The Huawei P20 Pro has a copy speed that’s old-school (DDR4), It has low graphic chipset (12-core Mali G72 chipset), no headphone jack, no wireless charging, it does not support Netflix HD streaming, the 4k video recording is trash, the Artificial intelligence on the camera saturate a lot when used to take photos on low light and it has huge smoothing because the processing is too rude.

That said, the above downsides are nothing much of a deal breaker for some prospective shoppers in Nigeria but when you compare the price with high-end phones like the pixel 2 and IPhone X in Nigeria, I guess you might wanna think twice.
