Design & Display

The design of the Google Pixel 4 looks very simplistic and less attractive. In my own opinion, I will say it is more of a minimalist set up than anything else.

At the same time, it is wanting to look like the iPhone 11 in Nigeria especially when you take a look at the camera set up at the back which now has a matte black metal finish.

However, the black colored Google Pixel 4 is the only one with a glossy back.

On the Google Pixel 4 is a 5.7 inch OLED display while the Pixel 4 XL comes with a bigger 6.3 inch OLED display. It is not a notch display, it has a slightly bigger bezels at the top and a small chin.

Google said they deliberately kept the Pixels at the top because they wanted to do something big with face unlock.

Did they succeed? Of course they did.The success was so big that they had to take away the fingerprint sensor completely on the Google Pixel 4.

Camera & Battery life

When Apple presented a squared looking camera at the back of the IPhone 11, Pro & Pro Max in the month of September, 2019; a lot of us wondered what kind of set up this is.

With what I am seeing now on the Google Pixel 4, I am very much convinced that this new design philosophy is here to stay. The era of Square Camera bumps is here.

At the back of the Google Pixel 4 are 16MP+ 12MP cameras. One main and one 2x telephoto lens. But there is no third camera which is suppose to be the ultra-wide.

The Google Pixel 4 has no ultra-wide camera which personally for me is very disappointing. I know software can improve a camera but you just can’t fake Ultra-wide.

We are in an era of ultra-wide, majority of the new high-end smartphones in Nigeria have ultra-wide, why will Google deliberately skip this?

In response to the above question, Google says ultra-wide is good but telephoto is better. Eh!😁

This may likely be a deal breaker for some in Nigeria especially now that ultra-wide is gradually becoming the latest trend.

Google also made another claim that her camera can capture details other smartphones can’t. To some extent, this is true.

In front is an 8MP selfie camera that is good at taking amazing group and private selfies in Nigeria with much clarity and good amount of details.

Also available on the camera is a Super Res Zoom software that helps to enhance photo quality massively irrespective of the distance.

Just like every other high-end smartphones in Nigeria, the Google Pixel 4 have what they call night sight that works exactly like night mode on most flagships.

With night sight, you can capture pictures pretty well at night. There is also a feature called live HDR+ on the camera. It uses machine learning to approximate HDR+ in the view finder.

The Google Pixel 4 camera has dual exposure control, portrait mode, learning based white balance, wide-range portrait mode and astrophotography.

When it comes to battery, here is what we got.

On the Google Pixel 4, you will find a 2800mAh battery, the Google Pixel 4 XL on the other hand comes with a 3700mAh battery which looks kinda small.

The Pixel 4 is in fact the one with the smallest. We thank God Google is giving us an alternative with the Pixel 4 XL. So if you want more battery in Nigeria, simply buy the 4 XL.

Software, Spec & More

The software is another interesting part of the Google Pixel 4. It comes with Android 10 Operating System which has the latest android update.

You will also find some interesting Apps like the recorder app that transcribe voice into text. This can be very helpful during meetings, lectures and seminars in Nigeria.

Presently, the recorder app is only available in English, more languages are coming soon.

Google Assistant have also been improved upon. It can now quickly help you search your phone, open apps, share what you have on your screen with friends and even run speech processing.

One strong factor responsible for the fast processing this time is the ability to run everything inside the phone without having to send any request to the cloud.

Google Assistant is now flexible. It takes only a fraction of your screen and leaves you with the remaining part so that you can run other apps as you use it.

Google says they are still working on improving it as time proceeds. We expect to see more improvements in Nigeria.

The Google Pixel 4 now have a new and outstanding feature called Motion Sense that make use of a miniature radar sensor to detect movement around the phone.

The Motion Sense feature have contributed immensely towards making the Google Pixel 4 have the fastest face unlock you will find on any smartphone in Nigeria.

The Google Pixel 4 is so smart that it can do a face unlock the very moment you try to reach out to it. It also turn-off the screen the moment you get your hands off it.

They also did something with the gestures.
There is now a new gesture swipe that lets you easily change the music you are listening to, snooze alarms, dismiss timer or silence the Google Pixel 4 entirely when a call is coming through.

All you have to do is simply wave your hands. It however did not work all the time.

The Google Pixel 4 comes with 6GB RAM, 64GB or 128GB ROM. It has a 90Hz refresh rate that can adjust seamlessly to suite the task you are working.

There is also a Snapdragon 855 chip and a Powerful Pixel Neural core processor that is fast.

My Thoughts

Google have continued to work relentlessly towards producing one of the best camera you can find on a smartphone in Nigeria.

They have presented the Google Pixel 4 to us this time. The camera still performs excellently even with the absence of ultra-wide.

However, we noticed a minimal upgrade in her design. Google just didn’t pay much attention on the design of the Pixel 4.

If you have been following the recent release from Tech giants lately, you will notice that Google is not the only one doing this, Apple also acted the same way.

I guess everyone is reserving her best design for 2020, so 2019 should have anything abi? There is no problem, we will wait until then.
